What is a character profile?
Outstanding characters make or break a story. It is essential to know your characters like they're your best friends. Ask them questions. What's their favorite snack? Do they have any pet peeves? Are they afraid of anything? Compile the answers to create a character profile.
A character profile is a collection of information you know about your characters, such as their backstory, traits, and physical appearance.
In this blog post and in this series, I will share character profiles I created for my cast of characters. Any information regarding this story is subject to change. After this post, check out future profiles in this series.
The Witches Without Magic Series
If you love black MC's (main character), a magic system, and family banter, then you'll love this series. Witches Without Magic series, W.W.M for short, follows four cousins from the Bales family, an old successful family of witches. Each book follows one of the cousins on their journey to love and happiness.
This post lists most of the characters in Book 1. In subsequent posts of this series, some characters appear more than once and their profiles may repeat. You may also notice that some characters have more information than others. Some information is more important to other characters e.g. height or eye color. Side characters don't have as much thought put into them because they aren't my main focus. Underlined words are important terms that get mentioned in the book, so keep an eye out for them.
You can use this list while you read the book, before, or after. It does not contain spoilers for Witches Without Magic Book 1.

About: Summer grew up with little magical ability. Even though she comes from a family of witches, her magical ability was close to that of a human's. Still, magic was her dream and to remain close to it she worked at a popular retail chain called Potions. Music was her hobby, and she wrote songs for fun, a skill her cousin, Nicki, knew would make her happier than practicing magic. Summer was good at it, but didn't want to peruse it because of the pressure from their grandmother.

About: Nicki was one of Summer's cousins. She worked at Levi's Tattoo Shop as one of his tattoo artists, much to their grandmother's dismay. If it was up to her, Nicki would be a councilwoman and one of the most powerful witches in the world. Since a little girl, Nicki was a magical prodigy. At that young age, she could cast complicated spells. The pressure got to Nicki and she quit. She ran away and followed her true passion. Tattoos.
3. Kenny

Role: MC's uncle
About: Kenneth Bales, also known as Uncle Kenny, is the youngest son of Maybelle and Joseph Bales. As the baby of the family, he was the troublemaker and got away with a lot because he's his mother's favorite. He is also Nicki's father. He didn't go into magic and he never got married. Instead, he's a world-renowned chef who travels all over the world.

About: Maya is Maybelle's mini-me. It's debated who her favorite grandchild is, but Maya aspires to be like her, a power woman. Maya is Megan's twin sister and Summer's first cousin. She's a seer, a person who gets visions of a point in time. She specifically sees possibilities for the future. She's outgoing, smart, and loves the color pink.

About: Megan is Maya's twin and also a seer. She sees visions of the present. Quiet and reserved, she's Maya's shadow. She tries her best to follow in her sister's footsteps. All of her cousins were overprotective of her because she didn't have an easy time growing up. She was a heavier child than most and was picked on because of it.

Role: MC's Uncle
About: Brooks is one of Maybelle and Joseph Bales' children, and the only one who didn't receive magical powers. It's rare, but it happens and that made his childhood different from his siblings who could easily connect to their parents. Brooks was always the outsider and only had his music to keep him company. He really detached himself from his family when he came out as gay and his parents weren't supportive. He stopped talking to them and didn't attend his father's funeral because of it. Life didn't end up so bad, however. He gained fame from his singing group and he was successful when he branched out on his own as a solo artist. He's now an OG in the music industry and now he owns a cafe downtown of Heart City called the Music Box.
7. Eddie
Full Name: Edward Bales

Role: MC's Father
About: Edward Bales is the oldest son of Maybelle and Joseph Bales. He is his father's son and followed in his military steps. He climbed the ranks and became a General before his leg injury. Now he's a father to Summer and a husband to his wife, Annette.

About: Annette Bales is Summer's mother, and she's married to Edward Bales. Annette comes from a witch family outside of Heart City. She met Edward while she was in the city and she and Maybelle didn't get along at first, but Claire, her sister-in-law, always adored her. Now she often hangs out with Claire and Brooks.
9. Maybelle
Full Name: Maybelle Bales

About: Maybelle Bales, though not born into the family, you couldn't tell from the way she promotes the family name. She comes from a time where witches were expected to marry and have babies with other witches. Her marriage to Joseph was arranged, but still they loved each other. He was her soul mate and partner in life. After his passing, she took his seat on the council and continued raising their granddaughter, Nicki, on her own.

Full Name: Joseph Bales

Role: MC's Grandfather
About: Joseph Bales was the patriarch of the family. He was a General and War hero before he joined the council. He was stern and strict, but loved his family. Nicki was his favorite grandchild, and he taught her a lot of things about magic before he passed away. The Bales follow his rules and way of life to this day like law.

The family is constantly trying to get her to open a bakery

About: Sierra works at Potions with Summer, saving money for medical school. She wants to become a doctor to help people, especially people like her. Sierra is half witch and half werewolf. Though society has improved since the Magic War, people of mixed species aren't always accepted. Sierra can cast magic, but she can't shift like her siblings or the pack she was born into. They don't consider her as part of the pack, so she grew up feeling like an outsider.

About: Darren started out as Lionel's friend, but eventually became friends with Summer, especially after their rough meeting. He and Lionel grew up in the same neighborhood. They started as enemies, but then became best friends. He works at the Music Box as the host and he hits on anything that walks.

Conclusion
Characters are just as important to story as plot. We want our characters to be lovable, memorable, and relatable. Keeping a character profile is an excellent reference tool when writing because it reminds of their motivations and ambitions. What do they want? Why do they want it? Why are they mean? Why are they upset? Should they not be? A character profile can help answer these questions.
